AN EVOLUTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Earlier this year in our class, “Sacred Dialogue, A Path to Enlarging Our Worldview”, we found rich meaning in David Bohm’s teaching on dialogue. Exploring Indigenous writings on effective communication in The Fourth Way was enlightening as well. Applying both principles to Thomas Keating’s description of dying to the false self as the movement “from a lower state of consciousness to a higher state of consciousness”, was the dynamic underlying our class. Our frame of reference for this new course will apply these principles of dialogue for effective communication to contemporary interests.
Sacred Dialogue: An Evolution of Consciousness will be five sessions meeting over a ten week period, allowing time for reading/research in the intervening weeks. The first and second meetings will identify with some specificity, the grounding principles of communication in The Fourth Way, to be followed by an in depth exploration of Bohm’s “dialogue”. Meeting three will be the teachings of mystics Meister Eckhart, Chuang Tzu and Thomas Merton: these reflect philosophical and spiritual traditions that are remarkably similar in their assessment of the human condition. Steady State Economics for the planet will be the subject of another teaching. Can everyone have the opportunity to flourish in a sustainable way while not being at the expense of other people or nature? The final subject will be Reparations. We will look at the history of Reparations going back to Civil War times. Precedents will be explored. Dialogue will center around collective responsibility and redemption.
The importance of dialogue is conscious communication, recognizing that the basis of our thoughts might well contain inherent bias of our own life experience. Much of our worldview is unconscious. Often we do not even recognize we are identifying with our thoughts. And that is why we are defending them. We are in effect, defending our very selves. Our hope is that in enlarging our worldview our level of conscious living will evolve. Come to participate!
Each meeting will consist of a teaching, discussion time, and an hour in a dialogue circle. Reading material will be provided in advance of each presentation.
