LECTIO DIVINA DAY OF PRAYER |
| The Center for Contemplative Living opens its doors for the second year at 3650 Yates Street with a focus on Lectio Divina. Lectio Divina is Latin for divine reading and represents a traditional Christian practice of reading Scripture that calls one to listen, reflect, respond, and finally rest in the Word of God. Sacred Scripture, unlike any other book, was written at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and the same Holy Spirit who dwells within us is the one who inspires our reading. In this prayerful pondering we come to know God, to enter into a deeper realtionship with Him, and to internalize the contemplative values of the Gospel. Praying Scripture is God's message sent to each of us by name. | |

| The Centering Prayer tradition is related to lectio divina and shouldn't be separated from it. While Centering Prayer is a good method to get us into the depths of contemplative prayer (contemplatio in Latin), lectio is traditionally the starting point. In our modern society, most people are surrounded by an ocean of input, from information saturation to just plain noise. Lectio offers a very different kind of input based on Christ-like values. Indeed, it may be nothing short of necessary in order to enable us to clean out the static and give ourselves a foundation for communication with our Creator. We take into prayer what is going on inside us. Lectio can help to create the good space we need. |
