CREATIVE EXPRESSION AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

MANDALAS

Creative expression is a way of making our interior life visible. In this workshop we will explore, create and color mandalas. There is something universal, spiritual, and healing about mandalas. These circular drawings and symbols can be found throughout our ancient history and symbolize wholeness, connectedness, symmetry, unity.

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means circle and if you start looking around, you will notice that circles are the pattern of the universe. Think of a flower, the stars, planets, even an atom with a nucleus at its center. Some Christian symbols that we might think of as mandalas are the communion host, the Celtic cross, round stained glass windows, labyrinths, halos, the rosary.

Tibetan Buddhists say that a mandala is “an integrated structure organized around a unifying center.” You probably have seen some of the sand paintings that these monks create. Creating a mandala, or even coloring one, is a meditative experience (like any creative process); it focuses our attention into the activity, keeping us rooted in the present moment – the only place we can truly encounter the Ultimate Mystery.

All materials will be supplied and are included in the cost of the workshop.
